In a candid conversation with Dr. Shashank Kharabanda with an insight into his life and his entrepreneurial journey.
Q: Dr. Shashank, thank you very much for taking the time to join us today. Welcome!
A: Thank you very much for inviting me to speak with you.
Q: To begin, please enlighten us on how you got into the sphere of healthcare?
A: After completing my medical studies abroad, I returned to India to serve my motherland, and I quickly noticed that there were significant disparities between people’s demands, quality, and cost when it comes to healthcare. So, along with a childhood friend whom we tragically lost in the Covid wave of 2021, started our first company, dedicated to offering inexpensive medical care to everyone, with the late Mr. Akshat Mullick (an XLRI Alumni). We began a chain of medical clinics in this way, but I thought that we weren’t reaching a large enough number of people, so I founded AngelLife Pvt Ltd to link a larger number of people with appropriate medical treatments.
When AngelLife was founded, my ideas took to flight; we launched AngelLife IVF & Fertility, then AngelLife Hair Care & Transplant, and the moment 2nd Covid Wave arrived in 2021, AngelLife Teleclinic and a dedicated Covid Helpline became a reality, moreover soon AngelLife will venture into Pharmaceuticals & online pharmacy.
Q: How long have you been in the field of business? And, if so, what obstacles did you have to overcome?
A: I founded my first firm in 2008 and my second, “AngelLife Pvt Ltd,” in 2018 as I have always had the entrepreneurial gene and that intense desire to start my own company since I was a child. It’s been a long road though, but my determination, commitment, and family’s support have kept me going. As an entrepreneur, things were difficult at first, but thanks to our Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s policies, things have improved and moreover, financial institutions are now more supportive of start-ups.
Q: Did you have any prior business experience before you started your entrepreneurial journey?
A: To be honest, I didn’t have much other than my commitment and faith in myself. I started from the ground up on my own, but my medical education compensated for my lack of field experience; my weakness also gave me an advantage because I was not bound by old business norms, so I innovated and implemented new ideas, and thankfully, despite early setbacks and losses, I learned from my mistakes and rebounded with a roaring success that is still unfolding.
Q: Could you please tell us more about the NGO “Cheshtha” that you founded?
A: In 2009, I wanted to build an organization where we didn’t have to worry about profits in terms of money, but profits in terms of blessings, so I made a few phone calls to like-minded friends who appreciated my idea, and “Cheshtha” was born. Over the years, our projects such as Vocational Training Centres for Women, Playschools for Children, Clothing and Food Distribution to the Poor, and Health Initiatives such as Health Camps have impacted the lives of thousands of individuals.
Q: Is there anything you’d like your readers to know about AngelLife’s future developments?
A: We have a number of plans in the works, but our primary focus in 2022-23 will be on expanding our services across India, particularly through franchisees for our Hair Transplant brand. Thanks to our excellent results, client-friendly, and affordable hair transplant packages, we are already receiving inquiries from multiple cities. In accordance with our vision of a “Healthy India, Strong India,” we will also launch our online medicine portal AngelLife Pharmacy & Teleclinics at the start of the new fiscal year.
Many people have been inspired by Dr. Shashank’s remarkable journey. His story did, in fact, end in a resounding success. He had demonstrated that failure is not an alternative to achievement, but rather a temporary setback that should be avoided. What counts most is how we respond to failures and what we learn from them.
